THE SYMBOLS

SANKOFA
Go back and fetch it—symbolizes the importance of learning from the past to make progress in the future. From the proverb: “Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi” (translated from the Akan language to mean “it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot”). The power of Sankofa centers around this principle: to know history and your heritage is to know your current self, the world around you, and how to better both.

KOKUROMOTIE
Thumb pointing upwards symbolizes cooperation, participation, teamwork, indispensability, harmony and support in pursuit of a common goal or vision. Project activities inspires collaboration toward accomplishing shared goals, improving our ability to communicate with one another, and recognizing the value of the contributions made by others. Kokuromotie teaches us the value of unity and working together, and it serves as a reminder that when we work together, we are capable of accomplishing more than when we work alone. The Akan proverb, “Yensiane kokuromotie ho mmo po” teaches us: “We don’t bypass the thumb to tie a knot.”

NYANSAPO
The Wisdom Knot symbolizes wisdom, ingenuity, intelligence, and patience. The Akan proverb associated with this Adinkra symbol is “Nyansapo wosane no badwenma”: “A wisdom knot is untied (only) by the wise.” Our project seeks wisdom in our heritage, intergenerational communication and rigorous collaborative inquiry.
